Fifty volunteers make Alewife Clean Up a Success!

Based on reports from the field, the Somerville Dog Owners Group's clean up at Alewife Brook Reservation had the biggest turnout statewide of all the projects that were held on Park Serve Day, a day of volunteerism coordinated by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation. With the help of the Charles District Manager, Richard Scott, and DCR employees, volunteers planted daylilies in front of Dilboy Memorial Pool and removed some thirty bags of trash, the hood of a car, an old bicycle, the cushion from a lawn chair and an assortment of baseballs, golf balls, toy balls and other balls.

The Somerville Dog Owners Group thanks all the volunteers, particularly all the Somerville High School student athletes, who helped to make this som|dog's biggest clean up ever! Special thanks to Greg Cartin, Somerville's Play It Smart Academic Coordinator; Nicole Viele, Somerville High School Athletic Director; and Will LeDuc, Somerville High School Highlanders Strength and Conditioning Coach, for recruiting and coordinating the student volunteers. We are also grateful for the support of Ward Seven Alderman, Robert Trane.
