the origin of the Somerville Dog Owners Group
Early in 2004, a Somerville resident found herself in a situation in which she could adopt a dog. She started researching dog adoption, dog training and responsible dog ownership. She visited the open spaces in her neighborhood and found that they were all posted "No Dogs Allowed."
In the meantime, she had been under some pressure at home to start a weblog. She concieved of somervilledog.com, a blog serving the human and canine residents of Somerville, MA, subscribed to a webhosting service and registered the domain name.
On Patriot's Day, she adopted "Strummer," a six-year-old, female, black standard poodle. She began to meet lots of neighors, who, like her, had no place in the neighborhood where they could safely and legally allow their dogs to play off-leash. The Somerville Journal ran a story that summer about dog owners interested in turning Belmont Park into a dog park.
In August, a friend from a local dog play group suggested that they invite some other dog owners and get together over beers to talk about promoting off-leash recreation in Somerville. Seven people attended this first planning meeting. We voted on the name, som|dog, at the next meeting in September 2004.
In the meantime, an online message board, Somerville's first, albeit virtual, dog park, was set up to foster the community of Somerville Dog Owners.
